• Introduction

  The purpose of this document is to familiarize you with the policies and use of the Compaq Computer Corporation's Education Software Library and Campuswide Software License Grant or Compaq ESL/CSLG. The Compaq ESL/CSLG is a collection of over 600 software products for OpenVMS, ULTRIX, Tru64 UNIX, and NT systems. A copy of this booklet must accompany each covered CPU.

• Who is the Program Coordinator for the ESL/CSLG?
  Program Coordination is primarily handled by Ray Helmke.

• What is a Subscriber to the ESL/CSLG?

  A subscriber to the ESL/CSLG is a computer located on the Cornell campus or other branch campus. A subscriber has the following rights granted for the duration of the subscription period:

  1. A license to use all the software in the library collection (with the exception of Operating SupportedHardware and Pathworks, which require initial licenses purchased outside the program).
  2. Right to updates to all the software updates in the library collection.
  3. Access to distribution copies of the software distribution media in order to install any of the software in the library on the licensed Compaq computer.

  4. Access to a reference set of documentation for all of the software in the library. This documentation is only available online in various formats.
  5. Technical support from HP will be used for the resolution of questions that cannot be answered by postings to the electronic mail list CSLG-L@cornell.edu

• To What Terms and Conditions Are Members of ESL/CSLG Program obligated to Comply?

  HP is granting you a License; that is, the right to use the Library Software in accordance with the following terms:

  1. You may use the Library Software only on the single computer to which it has been permanently assigned as indicated on page one, above. For purposes of this License, use is intended to mean the copying of any portion of the instructions or data in the Software and/or any material associated therewith from storage units or media into the computer for the purpose of executing or running the Software.
  2. You may not otherwise copy, modify or merge the Software (or any portion thereof) with other non-library software for use on that computer.
  3. You may use the Software temporarily on another computer should the original computer malfunction.
  4. You may not transfer this License and/or the Software to anyone or to another system.
  5. Failure to comply with these terms (including the copying, transfer or distribution of the Software in an unauthorized manner) may constitute a criminal act and result in actions by the Compaq Computer Corporation and Cornell University.
  6. In addition, you may lose the right to use the Software on the computer if any of the above terms are violated.
  7. Use of the software MUST comply with the further terms and conditions outlined at the end of this document.
  Cornell University has made other commitments and obligations to HP which include the confidentiality and non-disclosure nature of this program without the written consent of HP. For further details, contact

• What Does this Document Permit and Require You to Do?

  This document certifies that the computer identified above is licensed to use all software titles in the Software Library and must accompany the computer at all times. The system manager must make library members aware of the terms and conditions specified in this document. If an audit of the computer occurs, this certificate must be presented.

• How Does a Library Member Obtain Software and Software Updates for the Licensed Computer?

  To request software, please send an e-mail message to

  stating:

  1. name(s) of software packages and version numbers
  2. your name, e-mail address, and phone number
  3. preferred method of distribution (with appropriate details such as DECnet or destination address)
  Access directly to the distribution CDs can be arranged. If you want your own copy of the software distribution (for an additional fee), please contact

• How Does One Obtain Documentation for the Software Titles in the Library?

  Documentation for all of the software products in the ESL/CSLG is available on CD-ROM in various formats. CD-ROM documentation, which HP updates periodically during the year (and provides to us on a subscription basis), is available online from any X-Windows System on campus and, when we have backup for the materials, for a one-week loan period. In all cases, the most current CD-ROM release (as it may provide the only copy of documentation for one of the products in the ESL/CSLG) will not be available for loan but will remain online for reference. Previous versions, however, can be borrowed and will be available for a one-week extension providing no one is on the waiting list for the CD-ROM.

• How Does One Obtain License PAKs for the Software Titles in the Library?

  Many of the titles in the ESL/CSLG program require a license PAK to run. License PAKs will be sent via electronic mail to each department's CSLG administrator whenever a new CD has been purchased. The latest PAKs are also available from

• How Does One Get Software Questions Answered?

  If you have any questions regarding the installation and/or use of the software on your computer, you first contact your local system manager (see front page). If they can not help, you should send electronic mail to

  with your e-mail address, a description of your problem and some sense of how urgent the problem is. If necessary, the problem will be escalated to HP for resolution. Once the problem is resolved, please send the resolution in e-mail to

  so others may benefit from your experience.

• What happens if the ESL and/or CSLG are terminated?

  Upon termination of the ESL/CSLG contract by Cornell University or HP, fees paid are non-refundable and cannot be applied towards the purchase of software from HP. Upon termination of the CSLG contract, all copies of software obtained by the program must be erased, destroyed and/or returned to the ESL/CSLG Program Coordinator.

• How can you help make the ESL/CSLG successful?

  There are a number of ways which will help make the use of the ESL/CSLG successful. The most important ones are:

  1. Use as much of the software as possible. We encourage you to use all the software.
  2. Make comments regarding the operation or your experience using the ESL/CSLG Program by sending e'mail to Cornell's CSLG administrator.
  3. Do not violate the terms and conditions of the ESL/CSLG as set forth in this document. If you are unsure of any of these terms or conditions, please ask

  4. What happens if the ESL and/or CSLG are terminated?

  5. How can you help make the ESL/CSLG successful?

     There are a number of ways which will help make the use of the ESL/CSLG successful. The most important ones are:

     1. Use as much of the software as possible. We encourage you to use all the software.
     2. Make comments regarding the operation or your experience using the ESL/CSLG Program on the standard CIT Feedback Form (one is attached).
     3. Do not violate the terms and conditions of the ESL/CSLG as set forth in this document. If you are unsure of any of these terms or conditions, please ask

     4. Do not allow other CPUs to copy any of the library software resident on your CPU.

  6. Audits

     Periodic audits and/or surveys will be conducted to determine:

     1. Software usage for the purposes of improving the ESL/CSLG and services provided;

  7. Who must read this document?

     Since the covered CPU computer you are using is a subscriber to the ESL/CSLG, the system administrator and any support staff must read this document and acknowledge that you have read it by signing the paper document sent with the renewals.

ESL/CSLG Program Further Terms and Conditions

It is Cornell University's policy to prohibit software piracy and copyright infringements.

The signature above acknowledges the following terms and conditions of the CSLG Program.

1. CSLG Licenses have a one-year term.
2. CSLG Licenses cannot be redesignated or relicensed.
3. CSLG Licenses cannot be used for commercial use.
4. CSLG Licenses may only be used by authorized personnel of Cornell University who are either a faculty member, student or employee of Cornell University.
5. ULTRIX Layered Product Licenses are for use on ULTRIX systems only.
6. Each member of the CSLG Program is required to answer a survey form from the CSLG Manager on an annual basis.
7. Students, faculty, and employees who are no longer authorized to use the CSLG Program (graduates, transfers, etc.) must immediately notify the License Manager who will ensure the deinstallation of all CSLG software on workstations and who will delete the account on multi-user systems.
8. CSLG PAKs or the CSLG License Database cannot be disseminated, copied or posted.
9. Only those systems owned or leased by Cornell University or a faculty member, student or employee of Cornell University will be allowed to use CSLG Licenses.
10. CSLG VMS Licenses are unlimited for ALL systems.
11. CSLG Licenses include the initial license (except for operating systems) and RTNV (Right To New Version) for all software including operating systems for the term of the CSLG Agreement.
12. SupportedHardware with standard Digital Ultrix and DECshell licenses will be granted the right to new version (RTNV) under CSLG.
13. Only those systems that are under the AT&T Software Agreement will be allowed to use the CSLG Ultrix and CSLG DECshell Licenses.

14. To be eligible for the CSLG, each system must have a legal Compaq (Commercial) Standard Operating System.
15. VMS V5.0 or greater is required for VMS and VMS Layered Product support in the CSLG Program.
16. CSLG does not support versions of VMS previous to V5.0.
17. Once a system leaves the program, software and updates obtained under the program must be destroyed from that system.
