Reminder: Use Samba for Important Files
This is a periodic reminder that files stored locally on CLASSE computers are
not backed up. Please move any important files to a backed-up location on
CLASSE central storage (a.k.a. Samba). To check the backup policies for your Samba directory, please see
this schedule. For convenience, shortcut folders to Samba can be created on your computer's desktop (see, for example, the CLASSE_shortcuts folder on Windows desktops). Please do not hesitate to submit a
ServiceRequest with any questions about file storage at CLASSE.
[CIT] Box File Retention Policy Changes: Monday, 22-Feb-2021
Starting today, files stored on
Cornell Box will be subject to the following changes in retention policies:
- Items in the Trash will be deleted 30 days after they are discarded (reduced from 90 days). More information is available here.
- Files left behind by users no longer at Cornell, with no owners or collaborators, will be deleted after 90 days. More information is available here.
As files deleted from Box are not backed-up or retrievable, we highly recommend keeping copies of any important data in a backed-up location on
CLASSE central storage (a.k.a. Samba). Please submit a
ServiceRequest with any questions about file storage at CLASSE, and direct any questions or comments about Box to the
Cornell IT Service Desk.
General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our
NewsLetter and via
CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.
Unless other arrangements have been made,
CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see
SystemExpectations.
