Today's topics:
Usage of lnx201
Over the past year, we have been promoting
lnx201.classe.cornell.edu
as a general purpose Linux login node, to be used in conjunction with the Linux compute farm (
https://wiki.classe.cornell.edu/Computing/GridEngine). Given the recent spike in usage of
lnx201
, we would like to remind everyone of some basic usage guidelines:
- Please refrain from running memory- or CPU-intensive jobs on
lnx201
for longer than a few minutes. This node is a shared resource in high demand, and intensive use by a small number of users can degrade its performance for everyone else.
- Computationally intensive jobs should be submitted to the Linux compute farm. For a brief overview, see https://wiki.classe.cornell.edu/Computing/ComputeFarmIntro
- We have specific instructions for running MATLAB and Mathematica on the compute farm
- The compute farm also supports interactive use via the qrsh command:
Thank you for your cooperation. We would appreciate any suggestions for improvements to our computing infrastructure.
Upcoming network maintenance
Please be aware that during the summer down, there will be occasional and brief network interruptions of one minute or less as we update network configurations around the lab. Each interruption will be announced beforehand. Please do not hesitate to contact the IT group at
service-classe@cornell.edu with any questions or concerns.
RedRover-Secure retiring tomorrow
On July 15 (tomorrow!), CIT will discontinue the RedRover-Secure wireless service. For more information, see
http://itnews.cornell.edu/help-itcornell-get-message-out-redrover-secure-retiring-july-15.
For secure wireless service, please use eduroam instead:
http://www.it.cornell.edu/services/wifi/. Eduroam is a global service that can also be used at other participating institutions.
Regular RedRover (not secure) will remain in place.
TeX Live 2014 Update
TeX Live 2014 distribution is available to all CLASSE SL6 Linux systems. Please see the
LaTeX wiki page for details and instructions on use.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our
NewsLetter and via
CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.
Unless other arrangements have been made,
CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see
SystemExpectations.
