Some Linux computers will start using CLASSE logins

CLASSE (the Lab) is in the process of changing LEPP Linux computers to accept CLASSE authentication.

LNX201 was one of the first public computers to have been updated. This means that if you do not already have a valid CLASSE or LNS Kerberos ticket, you will need to enter your CLASSE username and password to login to LNX201. The help avoid any confusion, all Linux systems will be updated in the following weeks to explicitly notify you of which credentials to use when logging in.

Most CLASSE Linux systems still default to the LNS kerberos domain, and a lab-wide migration is not planned until the next extended down. If you have not already done so, we would like to again encourage everyone to set their CLASSE, LNS Interactive, and LNS Network passwords to the same value. This will simplify your access to all CLASSE resources and negate any impact from moving individual systems and services between CLASSE and LNS. Kronos Basic vs. Full

For employees that fill out Kronos timesheets at https://www.kronos.cornell.edu, Cornell recommends using the Basic version, not Full. Full Kronos is a much heavier application than Basic Kronos, and it can sometimes have trouble with Java updates (as it did last week).

Red Hat Developer Toolset

On Tuesday we will be pushing the Red Hat Developer Toolset 1.1 to all SL6 systems which (among other things) provides a supportable local installation of GCC and gfortran 4.7.2. Cyber Security Awareness

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
