Powering Down Your Computer
To the LEPP Computing Community:
This is in response to the University's request each December
for people to turn off their computers and monitors.
The Computer Group does support the recommendation that you turn off
your CRT or LCD display overnight or when it is not in use for extended
periods of time. However, we do NOT advise or support shutting computers
down. Turning off your computer causes serious problems for backup,
remote system management, and hardware reliability.
The use of fancy (E.G. 3-D) screen-savers also causes problems for
backup, increases power consumption and does not further the goals of
the Lab. We recommend the use of a blank screen saver instead.
If you have any questions about these recommendations, please contact
any member of the Laboratory's Computer Group.
Thank you,
LEPP Computer Group
