FAQ:
Why can't I print from my laptop (or an experimental subnet) using IPP?
ANSWER:
lns61 is not running an IPP server, and we will not
enable it on each individual printer. This implementation of the IPP protocol is known to be buggy.
LPD, however, is time-tested and works like a charm ... usually ;-). Please see
PrintingAtCLASSE for instructions on printing from most LEPP systems.
On Linux, we do have a CUPS (which uses the IPP protocol) server that
broadcasts our print queues to systems on our public subnet.
However, we do not have the infrastructure in place for these
broadcasts (actually, multicasts) to make it to our protected
subnets. This is on our to-do list, (see RT ticket #7447 for more
information) but has to be a lower-priority than several other
projects and issues that we are working on. When this is complete,
laptop users should see a list of available queues that they can use
with no configuration.
This page will be updated when IPP printing is possible from our protected subnet (where most laptops live).
