RESCHEDULED: Home disk maintenance - Tuesday 02-Jan-2018
At approximately 4pm on Tuesday, 02-Jan-2018, all public CLASSE home directories will become unavailable for up to two hours. This is necessary for routine maintenance. All CLASSE Linux workstations, and anything accessing a CLASSE Linux home directory, including samba, will pause while the home disks are unavailable. Once the maintenance is complete, everything should resume where they left off.
Note: The original date for this maintenance was Thursday 21-Dec-2017.
CHESS DAQ to be Read-Only - Friday, 22-Dec-2017
At approximately 10am on Friday, 22-Dec-2017, the main CHESS DAQ and MAIA file systems will become read-only. This is required to initiate the two full archives of the 2017-3 data to tape.
CLASSE Managed Windows computers - Icon changes
Based on user feedback, CLASSE IT has removed some less used icons from our base image and standard software from the Desktop. The programs still exist, and can be accessed from the Start Menu. You can also add shortcuts back to the desktop yourself if you use the software regularly. We have removed:
- CCleaner
- PDF Tools V6
- PDF-XChange Office2PDF
Also, a new icon for a program called ConnectWise Control (shown
here) will be appearing in the system tray (next to the clock). We will provide more information about this software in a future newsletter.
GitLab
A CLASSE GitLab server, the open-source version of GitHub, is now available for your use. GitLab supports web-based git repositories and provides many project management tools, including a web-based UI, issue trackers, task managers, and continuous integration (CI).
Please see
GitLab for more information on using the CLASSE GitLab server -

Powering Down Your Computer (Winter holiday, December 23, 2017 - January 1, 2018)
As in recent years, the CLASSE computer group is making the following recommendations for the holiday period from Saturday, December 23, 2017, through Monday, January 1, 2018:
If you will be leaving for the holidays and have a desktop computer used only by yourself in Wilson, Newman or the Physical Sciences Building, please do a "graceful shutdown" of your computer before you leave.
Of course, if you expect to use your desktop computer from a remote location, then you should turn off only its display and not the computer itself.
Turn off only your computer's display if you will be away from your computer only for a night or weekend. Do not turn off the computer itself. Leaving it on makes it possible to install software patches and security updates while the computer is unattended.
Please use a blank screen saver when your computer is idle. Dynamic screen-savers increase power consumption and do not further the goals of the Lab.
If you have any questions about these recommendations, please contact the CLASSE IT group.
CESR maintenance and outage on 03-Jan-2018 and 10-Jan-2018
From approximately 10am to 2pm on Wednesday 03-Jan-2018 and Wednesday 10-Jan-2018, all CESR online filesystems, services, and workstations be unavailable. Anything accessing a CESR online resource will hang during this period.
This outage is necessary to start upgrading CESR to
ScientificLinux7.
General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our
NewsLetter and via
CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.
Unless other arrangements have been made,
CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see
SystemExpectations.
